Mom & Me, Our Journey
I fell in love with Sisterlocks 4 years ago. When I first saw them I just knew, I had to have them. However I didn't think I would be able to afford them. In that time I have fried, braided, waved and everything else I could think of doing to my hair, though I continued to research Sisterlocks.
My Mom had gotten really sick a few years ago and lost her hair. She wore A Lot of wigs. It had been so long since I seen her hair I forgot what it looked like. So we both had hair issues. I mentioned Sisterlocks to her, but she wasn't anywhere near to that idea yet. At the end of 2012, to my surprise, Mom proudly informed me her hair had grown out and with all that she had been through, she was going natural. I again suggested Sisterlocks. This time she said, "I'll think about it, get more info".
There were many times I would stay up, it seemed all night, reading blogs about them. I talked about Sisterlocks so much, I got my Mom excited about them as well. So, one super cold day in January, we decided to get them together. I was so anxious, I called and visited several people. I would report back to Mom, but she wouldn't say much. The more I ran around frantically searching, the calmer she got. I started to think Mom was chickening out on me!
One day about a month and a half later, Mom called me from out of town and I said I needed to slow down and breath. She said that's when mistakes are made when you're rushing. Mom went on to say, that this isn't about just a hair do, it's much more than that. She wanted someone that she had a spiritual and emotional connection to. We planned on being with this person, not just in the beginning, but hopefully for a very long time. She wanted someone that she could form a bond with. She then preceded to tell me that she would find our new sister, the loctition.
One late afternoon on Mar 20 Mom called and said, "I think I found her. I asked where was she. Mom said, "I don't know I haven't talk to her yet." I thought maybe she's a bit confused how this works! She told me how she would keep getting these inspirational quotes from a woman sending them out in group mails. Every time she would recieve one it would have something to do with how she was feeling or thinking about something. Guess what, this woman just happened to be a SL Trainee. Go figure! Mom said she talked briefly with her on the phone once and she ( Evette) invited her over for a consultation. When Mom went to meet with her, Evette had a client there who shared with Mom about a medical issue she had, very similar to Moms, that she also went through. Evette's client was her sister. Mom said it was one of the most enlightening meetings she had ever had, Mom said she felt such a kinship with these women, Evette truly understood the journey it took her to get to this point, that it was personal. Evette understood because she had been through it with her sister. Mom knew she was in the right place!
On April 5, 2013 it finally happened, it took 9 hours for my babies to be born, I was sisterlocked at last!! On April 6, 2013, 17 hours and 448 locks later, my wonderful insightful Mom became my Sisterlocks sister. It was a long long road to get here, for the both of us, but I am sooo glad to be able to share this fantastic journey with my best friend, My Mom!!
